5 Tricks to Stay Focused While Attending School Online

Focusing is hard and with online schooling gaining popularity, it just got harder.

Learning at home brings its own set of new distractions, challenges and opportunities. With more flexibility, freedom and self-directed learning, comes with it’s perks, but also a whole new set of distractions for you to conquer…

BUT WE CAN HELP!

Whether you’re a fresh-faced freshman, a seasoned senior, or in the midst of your educational journey, learning better ways to focus and STAY FOCUSED not only reduces anxiety and stress, but raises grades and work quality, while helping you actually retain the information you learned.

It’s not about working harder and longer, it’s about WORKING SMARTER!

Here are some ways you can stay focused and become a master at online-learning.

1) Have a Routine

Humans are creatives of habit. Creating a routine helps you accomplish things you need to do more efficiently and effectively. With school ‘out of the classroom’, it is important to create your own ‘school time’ while learning at home.

So many students will spend all day THINKING about their homework, but never any time actually DOING their homework. This raises stress, procrastination and lowers your overall work quality in the end. Break the cycle!

When you have homework to do, setting aside a designated time to study creates a space and time for your mind to put aside all other things and focus on the task at hand.

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE MUCH: JUST AN HOUR A DAY.

What is important is that you set aside the time to work and make that time a part of your everyday routine. So, when study time comes, your mind knows it’s time and focus and work.

2) Create a Space to Learn

Yes, your bed maybe be comfy, but it is not helping you focus.

YOU HAVE TO CREATE A SPACE TO STUDY IN.

Your brain can’t just ‘flip the switch’ and focus anywhere. It is vital to create a productive space for learning to happen.

Whether it’s the TV playing in the background, your bed being just a little too comfy, or your siblings fighting over the Xbox in the next room: your house is full of distractions.

FIND A SPACE WHERE YOU CAN BE ALONE AND DISTRACTION FREE.

Maybe it’s a desk in your bedroom or the dining room table your family never actually uses for dining. Put everything you need to study there: your laptop, chargers, a stash of your favorite healthy snacks, whatever you need to study and stay studying.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO MAKE IT YOUR OWN.

Put up your favorite artwork or quotes from your favorite author. Set the vibe for your study time. Put on your favorite study playlist, frequencies for focus, binaural beats for your brain, or whatever background noise puts you in your ‘study-zone’.

3) Use Incentives

Set up a reward system for yourself. Schoolwork tires on your mind and body, so breaks are a must. Use those breaks as a chance to set goals for yourself and reward yourself when you’ve met those goals.

TREAT YOURSELF.

Study rewards can be as simple as giving yourself time to browse social media, having a piece of your favorite candy or catching up on an episode of your favorite show.

Whatever it is, after every hour of study time, LET YOURSELF GOOF OFF.

By creating a reward system, you have more incentive to stay focused on your schoolwork when you’re doing it and relax better when you aren’t.

Of course, some larger projects require more study time than an hour, so adjust your work and break times to meet your studying needs. And if you feel your study, or break times slipping away from you…

SET TIMERS FOR YOURSELF.

Setting a timer is simple way to keep not only your work time on task, but also your break time. It is easy to let time slip away when scrolling through your phone or when you’re grinding away on that last paragraph of your essay, so set a timer.

It keeps your eyes off the clock and your focus on your work, where it belongs.

4) Hide the Distractions

This world is full of distractions. From buzzing phones to those leftovers in the fridge that are calling your name, distractions are everywhere. When your education turns virtual, your home turns into your classroom: a very distracting one.

FIND YOUR DISTRACTIONS

In order to get rid of distractions, you have to find them. Take a moment and think…

What’s distracting me?

A common one is your phone. If you can hear it buzzing and see the alerts piling up on your lock screen, it is distracting you! Plug your phone in, put in on Do Not Disturb and leave it there. If you have to, give it to a friend or family member to ‘hide it’ for you when it’s time to study.

OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND.

But phones aren’t the only distraction. When your laptop turns into your classroom, desk and library, it is easy to get sidetracked. One minute you’re searching for an analysis of To Kill A Mockingbird and before you know it, you’ve been on reddit for the half hour.

YOU’RE NOT ALONE.

That’s why there are plug-ins and extensions you can download for Google Chrome or Safari to ‘block’ yourself from the sites that distract when it’s time to study and let you turn it off when study time is done.

Whatever the distraction…

FIND IT AND HIDE IT!

By separating your distractions from your study time, it allows your brain to tunnel its focus where it belongs: your schoolwork.

5) Fuel Your Brain

You can do it all: eliminate distractions, create a routine, make a study space, use incentives and still not be able to focus when it’s time to study. Maybe you’ve tried it all, but you still find your brain wandering. It’s FRUSTRATING.

It’s not about just DOING the things your mind needs to focus better but GIVING it the things it needs to focus better.

GIVE YOUR BODY THE TOOLS TO SUPPORT YOUR MIND.

The brain is muscle. It gets tired, it gets stronger and it doesn’t work right when it’s not fed properly.

DEFICIENCIES IN IRON, MAGNESIUM AND OTHER KEY VITAMINS LIKE D AND B12, CAN MAKE FOCUSING NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.

By giving your body the building blocks, it needs, your brain can focus better, faster and longer. These vitamins and minerals can be found in any old multivitamin and sometimes, it’s just not enough.

Natural herbs such as Ginseng work with your body and mind to provide the focus, better working-memory function, while keeping your body calm. But not all ginseng is made the same…

Siberian Eluthero Root (just a fancy name for Siberian Ginseng) is praised for its impact and aid in focus, memory retention, boost your immune system, improve cognitive function, and the list goes on.
